WTR 2009 - Driving against the wind

The last day of WindTurbineRace 2009 showed that the event successfully had established focus on the fun aspects of wind energy and on what can be harvest from the wind. Sunday afternoon the final race ended with handing over the trophy to the winning team Spirit of Amsterdam from Amsterdam university. As organizers we are proud that it had been a well visited event with 3.100 interested spectators, among those about 600 youngsters. WTR 2009 should first of all show how it is possible for these specially engineered vehicles to drive against the wind using nothing but the wind. A number of other associated events kept spectators entertained among those parachute, nice local from food west-Jylland, invited talks, veteran flight, etc. Technical Thursday

The arrangement Thursday evening focused on technical and scientific aspects of what makes these vehicles work and how the different teams had optimized and found solutions building their car. Furthermore, the spurious mechanics of wind driven vehicles was demonstrated experimentally where a car with a propeller driven by the wheels of is pulling the car forward thereby driving the propeller which drives the car, which drives the wheels, which drives the propeller, which.... Friday noon youngsters from high school and technical high school visited the teams working on their car, getting a first hand view and talking to team-members about their car. Other interesting cars could also be seen among those several electrically driven cars, hybrid cars from Ringk�bing-Skjern municipal and a Vestas�elbil. �At the same time the Danish Flight museum had free entrance giving everybody interested a nice opportunity to see historical airplanes, both civilian and military, among those the famous World War II fighter Supermarine Spitfire. An exhibition with Vestas Wind Systems, DTU/RIS�, Danmarks Vindkrafthistoriske Samling, Energitjenesten and AU/HIH from Herning could also be viewed. Nice food was organized by Kurt B�ndergaard and Lasse Svenningsen serving the best local specialties to the delight of team-members, officials and about 350 spectators. Food was sponsored by Vestjyske Food and Events. Friday afternoon first runs were carried out by all teams, each having the possibility to tune their setup. Saturday noon meteorologist Peter Tanev, explained about the wonders of weather, telling stories with good humor and entertaining well over 100 interested. Other side events included veteran flight, aerobatics, hang-gliding and trips with a helicopter. At 14.00h the first test runs with the cars begun, but winds were at 6 m/s and below dropping to 3 m/s kl. 16.00. Therefore no official runs were logged on Saturday but the vehicles did show their potential capable of relative speeds up to 40%. Saturday evening ended with rock an roll concert by Paddy Wagon playing the best of Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Gasolin, TV2 and many more. |
